When it comes to wearing a winter wardrobe or summer wardrobe, too many people get bogged down in looking right for the season. This is counter-productive on many levels. Firstly, you only get to enjoy the great things in your wardrobe for a small part of the year. Secondly, it is really expensive continually swapping clothes because it is slightly warmer or colder. There are some great, attractive looks that will last through the whole year.

The classics are obvious. A pair of skinny or slim fitting denim jeans, or cotton chinos will work just as well in the winter as they will in the summer. The upper body is slightly harder to style across the seasons but is not impossible. A lot of people will wear a thick wool or cotton sweater through the winter, which will obviously look out of place in the summer. Likewise, a short-sleeved button-down shirt is not going to look great in the winter when the wearer’s nipples are sticking through. But a smart, full sleeved cotton shirt can be done up in the winter to look smart and warm, or worn relaxed in the summer with the top button down and the hem over the jeans (or even in a French tuck) to make a summer, youthful look. Straight away that shirt is good for all twelve months of the year, as are the trousers.

Footwear is equally easy to manipulate. Thick, heavy-duty snow boots might be great for the winter, but they’re useless come summer and will just cause smelly feet. Many boot manufacturers will offer a lighter version of their favourite boots that will withstand the elements but also look great on a hot day.

Don’t even worry about headwear; a deer trapper hat truly serves a purpose in the colder months and looks great as a quirky piece in the warm. Baseball caps are universally great as long as we switch them up and opt for smart trucker and snapback hats instead of tatty baseball caps.

The key is not being afraid to switch it up. The seasons change but our wardrobe doesn’t have to.
